About Mummy's Fables
Mummy’s Fables is a collection of rhyming picture books created by Mel Scott-Avis – a passionate children’s book creator, illustrator, and mummy of two. After reading countless picture books to her own children, Mel saw firsthand how stories can shape a child’s understanding of emotions and behaviours.
Inspired by Aesop’s Fables – timeless tales that have taught morals for thousands of years – Mummy’s Fables brings modern-day lessons to life through engaging, original rhymes. Each story explores important PSHE themes such as showing kindness, having patience, understanding consequences, and making friends.
Mel writes and illustrates each story, bringing them to life with charming characters – from greedy wizards to brave pigeons and magical grannies – each one inspired by how children view the world, with their boundless imagination, playful games, and innate sense of adventure.
“When I saw how well my own children engaged with beautifully illustrated, rhyming stories, I thought - wouldn’t it be great to have a whole series of picture books like this, that also taught something useful? And so, the idea for Mummy’s Fables was born…”

Mummy’s Fables launches with its debut book The Wizard’s Assistant, a witty and whimsical tale about honesty, kindness and forgiveness. Greedy Grimble the Wizard deceives his customers with poor quality potions, while his kind assistant, Sincerus, dreams of using magic for good. But when Sincerus conjures his own secret spell, the wizard soon discovers that his lies have unexpected consequences.
